Paul Cret: L'Ordine americano
Abstract
Questo testo affronta il problema del rapporto tra ordine classico e ordine della modernità nell'opera dell'architetto franco-americano Paul Philippe Cret (1876-1945), allievo di Jean-Louis Pascal e Julien Guadet all'école des Beaux-Arts di Parigi. Nel solco della tradizione e del lessico Beaux-Art, l'architettura civica di Cret, rappresentata nella sua concezione dall'ordine “atticoâ€, di cui egli fa un uso esplicito e filologico, elabora un programma antidogmatico che definirà “New Classicismâ€. Il testo approfondisce il caso della Folger Shakespeare Library realizzata a Washington DC (1929-1932) il cui ampliamento e ristrutturazione fu affidato (1977-1983) allo studio Cox & C. Nell'edificio è evidente il problema dell'interpretazione contemporanea dell'architettura classicista, dell'architettura nella quale vive l'idea di ordine classico. Il testo accenna al successo critico dell'opera di Cret e alle influenze indirette e dirette che la sua ricerca ebbe sulla modernità classicista di autori come Marcello Piacentini, Albert Speer, Adalberto Libera, Ludovico Quaroni, Luigi Moretti. Ed alle ulteriori migrazioni del suo stripped classicism attraverso l’opera e gli scritti dei suoi allievi di Philadelphia: nel contesto anglosassone (Louis Khan) e nel contesto cinese (Liang Sicheng).
